What Does a News Story Have to Do With My Community?

News is what someone somewhere needs to bury; everything else is marketing. Put it nicely so that they’ll read it and clearly so that they’ll remember it, photosquely so that they’ll remember it again and, of course, accurately so that they’ll be guided by the light of it. But sometimes the news can be bad, and even dangerous. It’s important to understand the difference between the two, and how to handle them.

There are some things in the news that are not news at all, things that are newsworthy but not in alignment with the public’s need to know them. Take the example of a terrorist attack, which is obviously a horrible thing. But it is also a kind of event that will have an effect on many people, because some lives are lost or because of injuries. These events need to be covered in some way, but that doesn’t mean that you have to make news out of them. The job of the media is to make news out of events that affect the general public in a positive way. That’s why reporting about real estate is such good media: it’s a story that gives people information that makes them feel good.

On the other hand, if something terrible happens to a person or a place and a news story comes out, there is a huge demand for explanations. That’s when you get into the difficult business of making news out of something that should just be left alone. At that point you run into the problem of creating news out of something that could easily be explained and just as easily be forgotten. This is why there are newspapers, magazines and television programs that are devoted to explaining things in a way that doesn’t hurt anyone’s feelings, and doesn’t make people feel like they’re being painted with inaccurate and unfair paint. It’s also why listeners don’t want to hear the same news from any other source, since different societies have different needs.

Even within the same country, there can be different societal situations that make certain types of news more interesting or important than others. Take the case of child molestation. In one society, it’s usually not considered newsworthy; in another, it’s considered commonplace and very damaging to a child’s emotional and psychological development. It’s a very tricky situation. It’s difficult to draw the line between being a news item and being a news event. The only way to get a handle on this is to determine which type of news you prefer: what’s interesting and necessary for your listeners, and what may affect them negatively.

Many people subscribe to magazines, and some even watch television networks based upon what’s happening in their own towns, cities and countries. While these sources may not always tell the whole truth, there are some items they’ll report on that are newsworthy. They will provide some detail and this will make people feel better or more informed. But if this type of news is all they’re feeding you, then they may also be broadcasting some events that have nothing to do with your community, city, state or country. Newspapers have a great impact on many people. It’s a way to pass on information that may affect them, as well as an outlet to get breaking news that other media outlets wouldn’t want to publish.

When it comes down to it, the answer isn’t easy. Some news stories and information may affect many people positively, while others may affect some listeners negatively. The important thing is to know what you like, what you need, and what may affect your listeners the most. If you need to see a positive effect from a news story, then you need to pursue it; if it was bad, then you should drop it.
